Does My Child Need A Dental Crown?
How Crowns Are Used
Dental crowns are usually used to restore teeth that have large cavities that cannot be treated with a filling. Large fillings are less durable and stable than a crown, so treatment with dental crowns is usually preferred.
Crowns are also used to protect teeth that have been treated with a root canal or pulpotomy. Because crowns cover up and protect the entire tooth, they are ideal for this purpose.
Similarly, crowns can be used to restore and repair a tooth that’s been damaged due to a traumatic oral injury, like a slip and fall or a hard hit in a contact sport. With a crown, you can restore your child’s smile and bit, and ensure their
mouth remains healthy after an accident.
Stainless steel crowns are our preferred method for restoring baby teeth. These crowns have a silver appearance, and are premade in a variety of sizes. They are ideal for baby teeth because they are inexpensive, but provide strong protection
that will keep the tooth healthy and strong until it falls out on its own as your child grows.
For repairing permanent teeth, however, porcelain crowns are a better option. These crowns are made of a ceramic material that looks and feels just like tooth enamel, so they will not affect your child’s appearance. They are custom-fitted
to provide the best possible results, and they are durable and long-lasting.
Is it safe for kids
To Get Dental Crowns?
Yes. Dental crowns are absolutely safe, and there are no major complications or side effects that you’ll have to worry about. Your child won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the process, since their mouth will be numbed during treatment. We
even offer sedation dentistry, which is a good option for kids who may be nervous about getting a crown.
There is no long recovery process, either. Just like a dental filling, your child can get back to their day-to-day routine immediately after getting a crown. This means it’s easy to schedule treatment when it’s convenient for you, and get
your child the help they need.
How long will it take?
For My Child To Get A Crown?
In most cases, pre-built stainless steel crowns can be placed in a single, 1-2 hour long appointment at our office. Dr. Nadgie. However, ceramic crowns will require at least 2 appointments with Dr. Nadgie at Smile Kids Pediatric Dentistry.
At your child’s first appointment, their tooth will be prepared for the crown, then Dr. Nadgie will need to work with a dental lab to build their permanent crown. This will take at least 2-3 weeks, so the process of getting a ceramic crown is
a bit longer and requires more appointments, compared to a stainless steel crown.
