Initial Exams and Xrays

Portrait of toddler learning to brush his teethAt Smile Kids! Pediatric Dentistry we’re proud to be your child’s first dental experience. Our offices offer a diverse array of the latest pediatric dental techniques and procedures. Among the essential services that we provide to young children are initial exams and advanced digital x-rays.

What Is an Initial Exam?

An initial exam is where you bring your baby into our offices for their first check-up. You get to know our team while we get to know you and your child. We can answer any questions you might have about tricky topics like dental insurance or fluoride levels in children’s toothpaste and ask you questions about your baby’s oral health and history. Initial exams are vital for forming the foundation of your baby’s relationship with their smile, a relationship that should last a lifetime.

When Should I Bring My Baby in for an Initial Exam?

There’s a ton of misleading information about the right time to bring your child in for their first exam. However, we like to follow the official recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association. They state that a child should have their initial exam by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first.

Why Is an Initial Exam so Important?

It might not seem important to some people - but an initial exam is the chance to discover problems early on and correct them while the solutions are relatively simple. Decay and discoloration can set in as soon as your baby’s first tooth erupts, so it’s critical to schedule an appointment immediately.

What Is a Digital X-Ray?

While most initial exams don’t involve x-rays, any dental procedure will probably require one as part of the pre-assessment. A digital x-ray is a sophisticated technique that is just like a normal film x-ray but far more sensitive. They can reveal hard to detect conditions, return high-resolution imagery, and work incredibly rapidly so that your child never has to sit still for too long.

Why Would My Child Need a Digital X-Ray?

X-rays are used in many standard procedures and are an essential tool when caring for your child. They can help us diagnose diseases, monitor the development of adult teeth, and create plans for any treatments that are necessary. While our dentists can learn a lot just from a visual inspection of your child’s teeth, sometimes we have to go deeper. Digital x-rays help us do that, tracking the spread of decay within a tooth to devise the best course of treatment for your child.

Are Digital X-Rays Safe?

We’re fully committed to your child’s safety and only use the latest in x-ray technology to ensure that they are never at any risk. Children are more radiosensitive than adults, which is why we only use digital x-rays that use less radiation than a standard x-ray.
