Fluoride Treatments For Kids

Fluoride treatments are affordable and are typically covered by dental insurance for kids under the age of 18. The treatment is quick and non-invasive, taking only about 5 minutes. It can be performed as part of any routine teeth cleaning and oral exam.

In the long run, fluoride treatments can save you both time and money. By preventing cavities and strengthening your child’s teeth, you can not only eliminate the risk of cavities, but you can avoid treatments like: dental fillings, dental crowns, or even root canal therapy for infected teeth.

Because they have so many benefits, fluoride treatments are usually recommended for kids every 6 months. If your child has a history of cavities or is particularly susceptible to tooth decay, we may recommend that they be treated more often, at 3 month intervals.

The Fluoride Treatment Process

We’ll always get your consent before applying any fluoride treatment and take all necessary measures to ensure your child’s safety throughout the entire process.

If your child gets fluoride treatment, the process will take just a few minutes. After their teeth have been cleaned, Dr. Nadgie will apply a fluoride-rich paste or gel to their teeth. This gel contains a very high level of fluoride compared to regular toothpaste, and helps strengthen your child’s teeth.

After about 5 minutes, the fluoride will be washed away. Your child shouldn’t eat or drink for about 30 minutes. The fluoride will help remineralize your child’s teeth, fighting back against tooth decay, and inhibiting the growth of oral bacteria.

What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatment is a bit different than a routine fluoride treatment. This treatment is intended to be an alternative to fillings for kids who are very young, or who have a small cavity in a baby tooth. In some cases, it may be appropriate as an alternative treatment for some small cavities or lesions in permanent teeth.

The solution is applied directly to a tooth with a cavity, and it destroys the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

SDF may delay or stop cavity development, and is usually re-applied periodically. This treatment’s success increases with reapplications and an excellent at-home oral hygiene routine. However, unlike a filling, SDF does not restore the shape of your child’s tooth. It also permanently stains the affected tooth black.

Since SDF delays the progression of the decay, this treatment may allow very young patients to get their cavities filled at an older age.
